Rare Early Edward Wormley for Dunbar Two-Piece Gondola Sectional Sofa

Rare Early Edward Wormley for Dunbar Two-Piece Gondola Sectional Sofa

$4,560.00 USD

Striking mid-century gondola-form sofa attributed to Edward Wormley for Dunbar, featuring a sculptural floating back and elegantly curved silhouette.

The design closely aligns with Wormley’s iconic gondola seating forms, defined by its gently sloped arms, architectural base, and distinctive suspended backrest—a construction detail that creates both visual lightness and ergonomic support. The proportions and craftsmanship strongly reflect Dunbar’s mid-century production, including the use of supportive strap construction beneath the seat.

While unmarked, the piece exhibits several hallmarks associated with Dunbar manufacture. The frame has been refinished at some point in its life, and there are subtle variations in form when compared to documented examples, suggesting the possibility of a custom or limited production variation.

A rare and compelling example of American modern design with strong designer attribution and undeniable presence. See less

Condition Notes
Vintage condition with significant wear consistent with age and use. The piece is structurally intact but would benefit from a full restoration. The walnut frame has been refinished at some point and shows visible wear, including scattered marks and surface inconsistencies. The upholstery is worn throughout, with areas of fabric fatigue, small holes, and general age-related wear. The foam is breaking down and will require replacement. While the sofa can be used as is, we recommend a full reupholstery and refinishing to bring the piece back to its intended level. The underlying form and construction make it an excellent candidate for restoration.
